Japanese vintage cotton textile, Sakai sarasa.

Printed cotton produced in Sakai, Osaka, from the Edo to Meiji period.

Developed under the influence of imported Indian chintz, then adapted to local use.

Patterns applied using woodblocks or stencil printing.

Floral motifs repeat across the surface in a balanced arrangement.

Used for everyday items such as linings, wrapping cloths, and interior use.
Not luxury, made to be used.

Indigo ground with layered yellow, green, and soft white.
Colors have settled into the surface over time.

Used in daily life, the cloth has softened with time.
