Vintage Japanese Tsutsugaki indigo-dyed textile

$470.00Price

Japanese vintage boro textile composed of various indigo-dyed cotton fabrics, including fragments decorated with traditional Tsutsugaki resist-dyed motifs.

Tsutsugaki is a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique in which a rice-paste resist is applied by hand through a tube-like tool to draw designs directly onto the cloth.

The fabric is then dyed, often with indigo, and the paste is washed away to reveal the undyed pattern.

Unlike stencil dyeing, the motifs are drawn by hand, giving each line a distinctive and expressive quality.

Large floral and botanical motifs in faded blue and white stand out against the deep indigo ground. Different fabrics have been joined and repaired by hand over time, with visible patches and stitching adding depth to the surface.

The combination of Tsutsugaki fragments, indigo tones, and repeated mending gives this long textile a strong and distinctive presence. It works beautifully as a wall hanging or as part of a Japanese textile collection.
