This is a Tsutsugaki-dyed cotton fragment of Tenugui textile.

Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cloth used for a variety of purposes, such as towel, hachimaki, decoration, or gift wrapping. Tenugui is generally rectangular, 35-40 cm wide and 90-100 cm long, and made of cotton. They were widely distributed as sales promotions for companies.

Tsutsudakaki is a Japanese resist-dyeing technique in which a pattern is drawn on the cloth with glue, the fabric is dyed, and the glue is washed off.
