This vest is made of indigo-dyed Sakiori fabric.

SAKIORI is a traditional Japanese weaving technique in which used kimono are torn into narrow strips and then rewoven to create a new, durable textile.

This process reflects a way of making that comes from necessity, where old cloth was not discarded but continuously reused and transformed.

It was commonly used for workwear, especially in farming communities in the Tohoku region and Yamagata Prefecture, where materials were limited and needed to last. Over time, through repeated use and washing, the fabric has softened, developing a more flexible and worn texture.

Areas that have thinned or opened have been carefully reinforced with Sashiko stitching, adding both strength and structure while preserving the original material. These layers of repair remain visible, showing how the garment was maintained and extended through use.

This vest is made of indigo-dyed Sakiori fabric, carrying the marks of its previous life and the hands that worked on it over time.
