Vintage Japanese Indigo Dochugi Rain Cape

This is a vintage Japanese travel coat (Dochugi or rain cape) made from old indigo-dyed striped fabric, dating back about 100 years.

The dochugi was a traditional outer garment worn during travel or outdoor work, serving as protection against dust, wind, and light rain. Both men and women used such garments—men for fieldwork or travel, and women often as an elegant cover for kimono when going out.

This piece is made with a deep indigo-dyed striped cotton on the outer side and a check-patterned lining on the inside. The contrasting tones reveal the quiet harmony of Japanese aesthetics.

Hand-sewn seams and subtle signs of wear convey a deep sense of time and care. The fine edging and drawstring collar show the craftsmanship of the period and the practical design suited for everyday life.

The generous cut and rounded silhouette allowed freedom of movement while keeping the body protected, embodying both functionality and grace. Today, it stands as a beautiful artifact of Japanese vintage cloth—an expression of resilience, simplicity, and the quiet dignity of life in the past.
