Vintage Japanese hand-painted paper Koinobori

Koinobori (鯉のぼり) are Japanese carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown to celebrate Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) on May 5th.
　
Families display them to wish for their children’s health, happiness, and prosperity.
　
Today, koinobori are typically made of fabric, but around 100 years ago they were commonly crafted from hand-painted paper. This example is made of paper and bears the gentle signs of age, including creases, small tears, and areas of wear that speak to its long history of seasonal use.
　
Each koinobori was traditionally handmade, and surviving paper examples have become increasingly rare. It can be displayed as a striking piece of Japanese folk art or textile-inspired wall décor.
