These hand-knitted straw sandals were used and found in Nagano Prefecture. Straw has been used in Japan since ancient times for roofing, footwear, and many other practical purposes.

The soles are built up in thick layers, a functional detail that protects the feet from snow and the cold ground. The structure is dense, with tightly bound fibers forming a durable base.

They were likely made in the late 20th century.
