Vintage Japanese hand-knitted straw sandals

Straw sandals made and used in Nagano, Japan.
Made primarily from rice straw, thickly woven to wrap and protect the foot.
　
The sole and sides use a large volume of straw, offering insulation against cold and snow.
They are thought to have been made for winter work and walking on snowy ground in a heavy-snow region.
　
Layered weaving and thick cords remain visible, expressing the quiet beauty of practical handwork.
