Japanese Vintage Patchwork Komebukuro Rice Bag

$180.00Price
Quantity

Vintage Japanese Komebukuro rice bag made by joining together a variety of cotton textiles.

Stripes, checks, indigo-dyed cloth, and shibori patterns are quietly combined throughout the piece. The restrained palette of black, indigo, and brown is accented by sections of white shibori cloth.

Komebukuro were traditional Japanese cloth bags used to store and carry rice. A thick cord runs around the opening, allowing the fabric to gather and the bag to be securely closed. The visible hand stitching and irregular arrangement of fabrics reveal the practical care involved in its construction.

Fading, wear, and traces of repair reflect its long history of use. It can be used for storage or displayed as a sculptural textile, either suspended by its cords or placed on a surface.
