Japanese Vintage Patchwork Komebukuro Rice Bag
Vintage Japanese Komebukuro, traditionally used for carrying and storing rice.
Made from a combination of indigo-dyed cotton fabrics with different striped and checked patterns.
Narrow grids, broad stripes, and darker plain sections are joined together, creating a varied surface while remaining within a restrained palette of deep indigo and faded natural tones.
The different fabrics have been carefully assembled by hand, and visible stitching follows the seams between the sections. The irregular arrangement of the textiles gives the bag a distinctive character that could only come from the reuse of existing cloth.
The opening is gathered with a cotton cord, forming a soft, rounded shape when closed. A small handwritten cloth label remains attached to the exterior, adding a quiet trace of its original use.
Its combination of indigo, stripes, checks, and handwork makes it especially beautiful when displayed hanging as a textile object.
