Tatou-shi is a type of Japanese paper used to wrap kimonos approximately 100 years ago.

At that time, paper was highly valued in Japan, so different types of used paper were glued together and repurposed into a single sheet.

The paper was treated with Kakishibu (persimmon tannin dye), a traditional Japanese natural dye that strengthens the paper and gives it a warm brown color.

Bold Japanese characters, handwritten text, and layers of recycled paper create a striking composition. The worn surface, tears, and traces of time give the paper a unique artistic quality and quiet beauty.

Originally used by pawnbrokers to wrap kimonos held as collateral for loans.

Hanging the paper where sunlight passes through it is also recommended, as the light reveals subtle variations in color and texture.
