Tatou-shi is a type of Japanese paper used to wrap kimonos approximately 100 years ago.

At that time, paper was highly valued in Japan, so different types of used paper were glued together and repurposed into a single sheet.

The paper was treated with Kakishibu (persimmon tannin dye), a traditional Japanese natural dye that strengthens the paper and gives it a rich brown color.

The layers of recycled paper, natural discoloration, creases, and traces of writing create a unique surface with an artistic quality and quiet beauty.

Originally used by pawnbrokers to wrap kimonos held as collateral for loans.

Hanging the paper where sunlight passes through it is also recommended, as the light reveals subtle variations in color and texture.
