Japanese Vintage Indigo Sashiko Fragment
Japanese vintage indigo-dyed cotton Katazome fragment featuring a dragonfly and botanical motifs.
The large dragonfly and finely rendered leaves are reserved in white against a deep indigo ground. In Japan, the dragonfly has long been known as kachimushi, or the “victory insect,” because it was believed to fly only forward. It is traditionally associated with courage, progress, and good fortune.
Horizontal lines of hand-stitched sashiko run across the cloth. The slightly irregular stitches bring a quiet rhythm to the composition, while variations in the indigo and gentle surface wear reveal its long history of use in everyday life.
It can be used as a small display cloth or framed and hung as a textile.
Fading, variations in color, fraying, surface wear, and small areas of damage are present due to age and use. These details are part of the character and history of this vintage textile.
