Japanese Vintage Indigo Sashiko Fragment

$120.00Price
Quantity

Japanese vintage indigo-dyed Katazome cotton textile, layered and secured with rows of hand-stitched sashiko.

Maple branches spread across softly undulating areas of indigo and undyed cloth. Small pieces with different orientations and fragments of the original pattern have been joined together, creating a new and unexpected composition.

Dense lines of sashiko run vertically and horizontally across the surface, while additional pieces of cloth have been placed over worn areas for reinforcement. This textile was used for many years in everyday life and repeatedly repaired whenever it became worn. Uneven hand stitching, overlapping layers, and variations in the faded indigo preserve the history of its continued use.

It can be displayed on a wall as a textile or used as a small mat or display cloth.

Fading, color variations, fraying, holes, surface wear, and visible repairs are present due to age and use. These traces reflect the long life of the cloth within a Japanese home.
