Japanese Vintage Indigo Katazome Noren
Japanese vintage indigo-dyed cotton Katazome Noren.
Pine branches and the Japanese hiragana characters “Fujimi” are resist-dyed in white across three panels. Evergreen pine has long been valued in Japan as an auspicious motif symbolizing longevity, resilience, and prosperity. The flowing lettering and finely rendered pine needles are arranged lightly across the indigo ground.
Years of use have created beautiful variations in the indigo, ranging from clear blue to softly faded tones. Each of the three panels has aged differently, giving the textile a quiet and distinctive character.
It can be used as a traditional Noren, displayed on a wall as a textile, or hung as a subtle partition within an interior.
Fading, variations in color, surface wear, small areas of damage, and traces of repair are present due to age. These details form part of the character and history of this vintage textile.
