This is an old hand-weaved indigo-dyed cotton 12-paneled Noren or shop curtain made in Japan in the late 20th century. This one is found in the northern west side of Japan.
In old times, it was used for winter to block wind and dust and keep warm air in. Nowadays, it means a cloth used as a room divider or decoration.
The family crest and these cranes and turtles were dyed on hand-woven high-quality cotton cloth using the indigo dyeing technique called tsutsugaki. It is considered to have been displayed at the entrance of a very wealthy house.
Japan still considers Cranes, turtles, pine, bamboo, and plums very auspicious. The upper part of the curtain is made of strong cotton.
This curtain was probably a very dark blue when made, but over the years it has faded to a bluish-green, which is beautiful.
※Bamboo sticks are not included.
