Straw work from Nagano.
Bundles of rice straw are tied and shaped to form protective footwear used for farming and outdoor labor. The structure is built by layering and binding the straw tightly, creating thickness and insulation.
The surface shows the texture of the material as it was handled and worn, with fibers loosening and darkening over time. The rope ties and knots remain intact, holding the form together.
Used in rural areas where practical materials were required, these were made and repaired as needed, using what was available.
