These hand-knitted straw sandals were used and found in Nagano Prefecture. Straw has been used for roofing, shoes, and many other things in Japan since ancient times.
The thick soles are a logical detail to protect the feet from snow and the cold ground.
They have perhaps made out in late 20c, made for horse.
