This is a tsutsugaki indigo-dyed cotton rug perhaps used to Yutan. A Yutan is a cover for a chest of drawers in old days.
The fabric is homespun, handwoven, and four narrow panels have been joined to make one furoshiki. It is a heavier fabric, thick and quite soft. There are a number of tiny holes and areas of thinning, but it is in great condition for the age.
Tsutsugaki is a Japanese technique of resist dyeing that involves drawing rice-paste designs on cloth, dyeing the cloth, and then washing off the paste.
