Vintage Shōnai Temari — circa 1950–1970
Handcrafted in the Shōnai region of Yamagata Prefecture, this traditional temari (handball) reflects the meticulous artistry and measured handwork of Japanese folk craft during the mid-Showa era.
Once made as cherished gifts to wish happiness and good fortune, each ball was wrapped in layers of silk or cotton thread over a soft core.
This piece, likely created between the 1950s and 1970s, shows a subdued palette of muted green, red-brown, off-white, and dull gold, with small touches of yellow. The colors have settled with age, and some fibers lift slightly from the surface, indicating long storage and natural wear.
A straightforward example of regional craftsmanship, it carries the quiet presence and steady workmanship characteristic of Shōnai’s mid-century textile traditions.
