A striking example of sakiori weaving, this long and narrow textile fragment was handwoven in rural Japan from recycled cotton cloth. Sakiori—literally “to tear and weave”—is a traditional method where old garments were cut into strips and woven into new cloth, extending the life of precious fabrics in a time when textiles were scarce.
This piece features a warm palette of browns and neutrals interspersed with bold stripes of red and muted indigo. Its tall, vertical proportions suggest it may once have been part of a runner or protective household textile. The uneven surface, softened fibers, and frayed ends bear witness to decades of use, giving it an expressive and tactile quality.
With its rhythm of colors and rustic character, the textile embodies the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in everyday utility (yō no bi). Today, it can be appreciated as an art piece hung on the wall, laid as a table runner, or studied as material culture of Japan’s folk traditions.
