This is an old Japanese dust cloth called Zokin. In Japan, zokin has long been the last use of textiles.

It was first woven for use in kimonos, and when it became damaged or worn outed, it was made into rugs and futons, and finally used as a zokin rag.

This one is indigo-dyed using the shibori technique, and it is reinforced with sashiko.
