A long and narrow sakiori sash handwoven in rural Japan from old cotton cloth.
Sakiori, meaning to tear and weave, is a practical method in which worn garments were cut into narrow strips and rewoven to extend the life of cloth at a time when textiles were scarce and valuable.
It reflects the resourcefulness of everyday life in rural communities, where fabric was used until nothing more could be taken from it.
This piece shows a calm arrangement of colors: a base of off-white and white, followed by bands of red, light brown, and dark brown, along with fine lines of purple running through the length.
The torn strips show small breaks, softened edges, and areas where the color has faded with long use. These marks give the cloth a straightforward and worked quality typical of Japanese old cloth.
The structure is simple and unadorned, allowing the reused fabric to speak quietly through its texture. It can be hung on a wall or placed on a shelf, keeping a subdued presence in any setting while showing the layered history of the material.
