Production of Japanese sarasa (calico) began in the edo period when skillful Japanese dye workers found a method to inspired the designs of Indian calicos.
Sakai is a port town located in Osaka. Sakai chintz is characterized by its realistic depiction of flowers and plants, compared to Kyoto. This is thought to reflect the influence of European chintz designs that came over from Dutch ships. Another characteristic of Sakai chintz is the use of blue as the base color and ochre, green, and reddish-brown as the color scheme.
