This piece is part of an antique Japanese mosquito net, meticulously crafted from hand-woven ramie with a rustic texture.
Mosquito nets, or kaya, were once an essential feature in households across Japan, particularly during the height of summer. To cope with the intense heat, families would open all the windows and sleep under these nets, which provided protection from insects while allowing for airflow.
This particular textile was traditionally dyed using natural indigo and Kariyasu (Miscanthus tinctorius) resulting in a soft, organic color palette that reflects its age and authenticity. Areas of wear have been carefully mended with Sashiko stitching, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that not only reinforces the fabric but also adds an element of artisanal beauty.
