An indigo dyed katazome cotton textile.
This piece was originally used as a futon cover and has been constructed from multiple katazome dyed and plain cotton panels, repeatedly patched and repaired over time.
Katazome is a resist dyeing technique using paper stencils and rice paste resist before dyeing. Chrysanthemum and karakusa motifs remain throughout the surface, while variations in indigo tone and fabric texture reflect the different cloths brought together.
Across its large scale, traces of mending and re-stitching remain visible, showing a textile shaped by continued practical use rather than decoration.
Suitable for use as a wall hanging, room divider, or large interior display.
