This is a Chu-gata katazome indigo-dyed cotton fragment.

Chugata-zome (中型染) is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that uses medium-sized stencil patterns to create intricate designs on textiles. The term "chugata" (中型) refers to the "medium-sized" stencil, while "zome" (染) means "dyeing." This method is part of Japan's rich heritage of katazome (stencil dyeing), which involves the use of stencils (kata) to apply resist paste to fabric before dyeing.

In chugata-zome, the stencils used are slightly larger and more elaborate than those for komon (細紋), which feature fine, detailed patterns. The designs in chugata-zome are often bolder but still maintain the aesthetic precision and elegance characteristic of Japanese dyeing arts.
