This is a katazome indigo-dyed cotton fragment.  The faded colors are very beautiful.


Katazome is a Japanese technique of stencil resist dyeing that involves drawing rice-paste designs on cloth, dyeing the cloth, and then washing off the paste.


This one is printed with carp fish. In Japan, the carp is thought of as an object that Prayers for Growth.  This is a very old item. It has not been washed to preserve its texture.
