Zanshi-ori Textile / Japan, Early–Mid 20th Century

This handwoven textile is an example of zanshi-ori—a traditional Japanese weaving technique that makes use of leftover threads (zanshi) from previous production runs. Rather than waste these remnants, artisans carefully wove them into new fabric, resulting in richly textured, naturally irregular patterns.

The vertical stripes in deep indigo, earthy browns, and off-whites reflect both practicality and aesthetic sensibility. Each section of the cloth tells a quiet story of resourcefulness and restraint, capturing the spirit of Japanese folk craftsmanship.

Woven on a traditional loom, this piece likely comes from a rural weaving community where nothing was discarded without purpose. Its irregularity is its charm—no two zanshi-ori textiles are ever the same.

Perfect for display as a textile art piece or as raw material for creative reuse.
