Bandori is a back pad, used mainly in the Tohoku region of Japan. It was used as a cushion to carry rice bales or heavy objects on the back.

Each family decorated the bandori with various decorations to wish for a good harvest, and they were displayed on festive occasions.

Farmer men knitted them during the winter. The material used was rice straws. Straw has been used for roofing, shoes, and many other things in Japan since ancient times.
