This Bandori is a traditional farmer’s backpack from the snowy Shonai region of Yamagata, Japan.

It is handwoven from natural rice straw and reinforced with wild grape bark, adding both strength and a beautiful textural contrast.

The decorative red cord bindings and soft braided shoulder straps reflect the care and ingenuity of rural craftsmanship.

In the past, such backpacks were used to carry harvested crops or firewood through deep winter snow.

Today, it stands as a sculptural example of Japanese folk craft, embodying both function and quiet beauty.
