This is a cotton cloth dyed with safflower.

It was probably part of a kimono that was dismantled after being used as a kimono.

The brightly colored kimono could not be worn by ordinary farmers and was worn by some upper class families.

They were dyed using a highly sophisticated technique with a long history called itajime shibori.

They are displayed as textile art or used in products.
