This old handwoven ramie noren was used in a sushi restaurant about 100 years ago.
During the Edo period, sushi shops often operated as mobile food stalls, and short noren like this were hung at the front to mark the business.
Traditionally, noren were used to block wind and dust during winter while helping to retain warm air inside. Today, they are often used as room dividers or decorative textiles.
The large Chinese characters in the center are hand-painted calligraphy—typically indicating the shop’s name or a symbolic word. This one represents the concept of “Taste,” along with the shop name.
The fabric is handwoven from hand-spun ramie yarn, giving it a beautiful, textured surface.
