This vintage juban (kimono undergarment) is a vibrant blend of traditional elegance and expressive design. The sleeves feature detailed scenic prints with elements such as fans, mountains, and clouds, depicted in soft purples, greens, and blues.

The body of the garment is made from various colorful silk fabrics, including deep red and blue panels. Most notably, the orange sections are dyed using natural safflower dye (benibana), giving the piece a warm, soft glow that only botanical dyeing can achieve. Additional patterned fabrics are hand-stitched in, adding depth and character to the garment.

The interior is lined with white cotton, offering breathability and comfort while enhancing the contrast with the vivid outer fabrics.

Originally intended as an underlayer beneath a formal kimono, this juban now stands on its own as a unique work of wearable art or a collector’s textile. The natural dye tones and scenic imagery together create a beautiful harmony between tradition and creativity.
