This is a vintage juban, traditionally worn underneath a kimono.

Made almost entirely of silk, it features a soft, flowing texture and a gentle sheen that has developed beautifully over time.

The garment is composed of various vintage silk fabrics, carefully patchworked together. Some sections include chūgata-zome, a traditional stencil-dyeing technique, adding subtle patterns and character to the piece. The interplay of colors, patterns, and textures creates a visually rich and harmonious composition—almost like a textile painting.

Though originally made as an undergarment, this juban can now be appreciated as a work of textile art, a decorative display piece, or even worn as a lightweight outer layer. Visible mending and signs of wear reflect the Japanese spirit of mottainai and the wabi-sabi appreciation for imperfection and transience.
