This large paper bag is a rare surviving example of utilitarian craftsmanship from old Japan. Made from durable handmade washi (Japanese paper) or paper textile, it was likely used for storing or transporting rice, seeds, or grain. The soft reddish-brown hue is likely the result of kakishibu—persimmon tannin dye—traditionally used in Japan for its waterproofing and strengthening qualities.

Creases, scuffs, and small holes speak to its many years of service, giving the surface a rich patina and a uniquely sculptural quality. The stamped characters and handmade seams reflect the practical yet meticulous care of its maker.

Once a humble storage bag, this object now carries the quiet dignity of time—perfect as an art piece, interior accent, or study in sustainability and material culture.
