This is a vintage indigo-dyed cotton textile, created using the traditional Japanese technique known as Shibori tie-dyeing.

Shibori is a centuries-old dyeing method in Japan that involves folding, twisting, binding, or compressing the fabric before dyeing. These manipulations resist the dye in certain areas, resulting in intricate patterns of contrasting indigo and undyed fabric.

This particular piece has been hand-repaired using Sashiko stitching, a traditional Japanese method of reinforcing textiles with decorative running stitches. These visible mends add both durability and character to the fabric.
