Antique Indigo-Dyed Handwoven Noren Curtain – Late 19th Century

This is a rare, handwoven indigo-dyed hemp 4-panel Noren (traditional shop curtain) crafted in the late 19th century in Japan. It was originally discovered in the Shōnai region of Yamagata Prefecture.

Please note: This Noren was originally made with five panels; however, one panel on the right side is missing, leaving four panels remaining.

Historically, such Noren were used during winter to block wind and dust and retain warmth. Today, they are often used as room dividers or decorative pieces.

The curtain features clouds and pine tree motifs, dyed onto high-quality handwoven ramie cloth using the traditional Tsutsugaki indigo dyeing technique. This particular piece is believed to have been displayed at the entrance of a wealthy household.

•The upper section is made of durable cotton.

•The lower section is thick, handwoven hemp.

Note: Bamboo hanging rods are not included.
