This double-sided textile is a vivid example of boro—Japan’s culture of reuse and repair. Built upon a base of indigo-dyed striped cotton, the surface is layered with old cloth fragments: solid browns, checked weaves, handwoven stripes, and a bold kasuri-style motif near the bottom. Scorched spots, hand-sewn patches, and irregular holes speak to years of hard use, most likely as a futon cover or work-related textile.

Each repair is an act of resilience, not decoration. The composition tells a quiet, layered story of daily life, where every scrap of cloth was made to serve again. The back side reveals more of the same stripe fabric, worn thin in areas and bearing signs of long-term contact with the body and floor.

Honest, raw, and deeply textured, this piece embodies the spirit of survival, frugality, and enduring beauty in the everyday materials of old Japan.
