This is a Katazome cotton 4-paneled textile. 
 
Katazome is a Japanese method of indigo dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil, typically a rice flour mixture applied with a brush or a tool such as a palette knife.
 
Four lengths were sewn together with a sewing machine, and some holes were repaired with hand stitching.
