This is a cotton sleeveless kimono dyed with safflower.

It appears to be of considerable age, and it is possible that it was worn more than 100 years ago.

It was made of several different safflower-dyed cotton fabrics that have been patched together, and the holes have been carefully repaired by hand Sashiko stitching.

Safflower dye is known to fade easily, but the fading of the colors creates a very beautiful gradation.
