This is a small fragment of hand-woven cotton cloth dyed with Benibana (safflower).

 

Hand-woven cotton cloth dyed with safflower. The beautiful flower patterns are dyed through using a technique called katazome.

 

Katazome is a Japanese dyeing technique using stencils and resists paste to create intricate patterns on fabric. It was probably originally used as the lining of a kimono.

 

All hand sewing by hand Sashiko stitching with indigo-dyed and non-dyed cotton threads.
