This is a small fragment of hand-woven cotton textile dyed with Akane(madder). 


"Akane-zome" is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that utilizes the red pigment extracted from the roots of the akane (Rubia cordifolia) plant.


It was probably originally used as the lining of a kimono.
