This rug is an old Japanese futon, originally made by sewing together many hand-woven indigo-dyed cotton lengths about 11 inches wide, which were used for kimonos.　
 
After sewing them together, the entire surface is stitched as reinforcement. They are also very beautiful from a decorative point of view.
 
It has been used for a long time and washed repeatedly, so it is soft to the touch.
