This piece is a fragment of what was originally a large floor covering, once laid over tatami mats to protect them from sun exposure. The paper is dyed with kakishibu—fermented persimmon tannin—valued for its insect-repelling and preservative properties, as well as its deepening color over time.

Made from reused materials such as old ledgers and handwritten documents, the surface shows signs of mending and layering, where torn areas were reinforced rather than discarded. Visible brush-written characters, stains, and hand-stitched seams reveal the passage of time and the care embedded in daily life.

This particular piece has been cut from a larger original in recent years, making it a rare and intimate artifact that offers a tangible connection to the domestic wisdom and aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Japanese life.
